…I had closets full of servers, a half rack packed with 1u servers, and lots of CRTs. And when software to easily and seamlessly create panoramas didn’t exist. This image was created by combining 32 images shot with an 18mm lense together in software to form the 360 degree view. Image registration points in overlapping shots were set manually.
A photo from downtown Denver at the corner of 17th and California streets using an 8mm circular fisheye lens. The shiny pillars are a sculpture which sits in a sunken water fountain (now frozen) on the NE corner of the street. Took the photo just after sunset when many of the surrounding office lights were still on. Christmas lights in the plaza across the street at the Arco tower and passing cars create all the reflections. Using panorama software to…
This is the ‘network neighborhood’ of Windows XP displayed on a TFT. Each pixel element is in reality .003x.01 inches. Photos taken with a 60mm micro nikkor lense, with 12+20+36mm extension tubes, at various levels of magnification.
Background This silicon zoo site has some interesting photos taken from under a microscope. They feature artwork added to commercial computer chips by circuit designers. The Project I was curious if it would be possible to capture micron-size features with my own digital camera, so I rigged my D100 camera with all the magnification gear I could find: I ended up using three Kenko 12, 20 and 36mm extension stacked together, plus a set of old Nikon PB4…
I drove back up to the summit of the pass and then hiked from the road about a half mile along a ridge where I could see in both directions across the continental divide. The clouds were just below the ridge. The layers of clouds were pretty spectacular at sunset, beneath the ridge were dark ominous clouds which were rushing by at incredible speeds. You could almost reach out and touch them. No; probably a better idea to keep a…
Met up with Jonas and Christian for Comdex in Vegas. The show is the smallest in years, and Key3Media (the organizer) is having financial problems. So, the conference itself wasn’t too crowded or hyped. On the other hand, it was easy and affordable to find a place to stay. We were at the Venetian.. The view from the Venetian, in infrared.. Mandatory cowboy and cowgirl (aka Glitter Gulch) shot.. Spent one day driving around…
Bill and I drove about 30 miles east of Denver tonight into the ‘plains’ to get away from the light pollution for some deep-space photography. Here’s a couple of photos of the diffuse nebula in the constellation Orion. These were shot with a Meade ETX-125, t-adapter, and Nikon D100. The object was tracked by the telescope’s motor drive unit while the camera exposed the CCD for 15s. The CCD was set to its highest sensitivity setting; HI-2 which is…
A photo of the moon reduced to 700×465 resolution, with only 5% of the actual detail of the full-size image. Some of the more interesting regions at 1:1… Saturn, cropped and magnified… These were all shot by connecting the D100 via t-adapter to a Meade ETX-125 telescope which is equivalent to a camera lense with a 1900mm focal length. Was using a small extender that increases that to 2150mm. Plus the ‘digital’ factor yields 3225mm. Sometime, I will try additionally…
We had a nice evening thunderstorm last night with lots of lightning. Good color in the sky from dusk and the glow of city lights in scattered rain. This shot is taken from the balcony, facing to the west.. I thought that looked so cool that I decided to get on the roof of the building. Dumb, in retrospect. Being on the roof actually didn’t seem as idiotic as it sounds. The bulk of the storm was a couple of…
